How to Choose the Right Christmas Tree Stand
If you plan to buy a Nordmann fir, it’s especially important to choose a stand that’s designed for this type of tree. The trunk of a Nordmann fir is significantly thicker than that of a traditional spruce, and the tree itself is much heavier.
Even the traditional Swedish Norway spruce has become thicker and heavier in recent years. This is because cultivated Christmas trees are much denser than those grown freely in the forest.
There are at least three reasons why you should avoid using a stand that’s too small for your tree:
- Difficulty in keeping the tree straight and the risk of it tipping over.
- Avoid the need to chop off bark around the base of the trunk to fit it into the stand. If you remove the bark, you risk impairing the tree’s ability to transport water up the trunk.
- Avoid frequent watering. A Christmas tree can sometimes absorb several liters of water per day. Some stands, especially older models, hold very little water. It’s crucial that the tree never runs out of water.
